About Cowboy Libretto
Cowboy Libretto is a digital archive and storytelling project dedicated to exploring, preserving, and examining the legacy of Western Swing music—a sound shaped by the fusion of jazz, blues, country, gospel, folk, big band, and swing. More than just a musical style, Western Swing reflects the migration, identity, and evolution of the American Southwest, offering a window into the cultural shifts that shaped American music and the people who made it.
I created Cowboy Libretto as a space for serious research and critical engagement with the history and influence of Western Swing. Through in-depth articles, archival research, artist profiles, and fieldwork, this project investigates the movement of people and music, the traditions that shaped Western Swing, and its continued relevance today. This work extends beyond the digital space, with publications, public talks, and pop-up exhibitions that further explore and share these stories.
